Overview

The Scientist I assists in the planning of, conducting, evaluating, and interpreting routine laboratory experiments. The individual monitors on going experiments and identifies and resolves or suggests alternates or solutions to complex occurrences. The individual understands and applies use of equipment, technology and materials associated with area of expertise and related studies and projects. The individual takes a more active role in non-routine analytical or process development activities.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities

  • Plans, conducts, evaluates, and interprets routine laboratory experiments
  • Participates in the development of new analytical methods, processes or technologies
  • Maintains familiarity with relevant literature
  • Maintains laboratory equipment, supplies and records
  • Applies scientific best practices to internal processes
  • Identifies opportunities to improve quality of work
  • May support tech transfer in to manufacturing or quality control as applicable
  • May be expected to evaluate completeness and accuracy of data collected by other scientists to ensure integrity of data

Proficiencies

  • The Scientist I has the following proficiencies
    • Advanced knowledge of chemistry and/or biochemistry and associated techniques
    • Independent planning, execution, and interpretation of routine laboratory experiments.
    • Able to assist in analyzing, data plotting and reporting results of laboratory experiments
    • Independent use and application of more complex instrumentation, computer systems and software for data acquisition and analysis
    • General knowledge of Excel, Word and PowerPoint
    • Understands basis of experimental design
    • Understands and applies required techniques in support of projects and studies according to pre-defined plans and protocols
    • Able to monitor on going experiments and identify and resolves or suggests alternates or solutions to complex occurrences
  • The Scientist I is continuing to develop the following proficiencies
    • Demonstrated knowledge of instruments, computer technology, and data analysis required to successfully complete project work and ability to apply knowledge in complex situations
    • Independent planning, execution, and interpretation of complex laboratory experiments
    • Understanding of experimental design for analytical or process development
    • Acquiring a broad scientific knowledge within department understanding of statistical concepts
    • Be able to multi-task across different project activities

Supervision

  • Works under minimal direct supervision
  • May train or provide guidance to lower level scientists
  • May direct technical work encompassing one aspect of a project under the oversight of more senior staff
  • May participate on project teams to provide scientific expertise

  • The Scientist I has the following problem solving skills
    • Demonstration of practical understanding of own scientific discipline and applies knowledge in support of product development.
    • Understanding and application of equipment, technology and materials associated with area of expertise and related studies and projects.

    • Implementation of new methods and processes.
    • Adequately assembles reports and presentations describing scientific information.
    • Familiarity with available new technologies and vendor offerings
    • Familiarity with Lean Six Sigma initiatives within company
  • The Scientist I is continuing to develop the following problem solving skills
    • Application of scientific knowledge to the design, conduct, and implementation of studies and projects.
    • Can independently solve problems or originate innovative solutions
    • Provide solutions that are logical and well supported by literature or data
    • Planning and implementation of new methods and processes
    • Under guidance of direct supervisor may make decisions on technical information generated
    • Understands and works across a range of scientific disciplines to respond to emerging market and customer needs
    • Consistently prepares and presents high quality reports and presentations describing scientific information
    • Familiarity and application of available new technologies and vendor offerings
    • May be LSS yellow belt trained

Oral & Written Communication

  • Prepares written summaries of data for technical reports (memos, development reports, client updates)
  • As appropriate, writes SOPs/STM’s/procedures/instructions
  • As appropriate, writes and reviews analytical plans, protocols or summary reports
  • As appropriate, may write SME content of technical reports (memos, development reports etc.)
  • Collaborates and communicates across work groups and project teams.
  • Communicates with customers with support from manager or technical lead.
  • Presents at departmental meetings to keep managers and team members apprised of the activities on project

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE:

This position reports to a Group Leader.

SCOPE MEASURES:

  • This position supports the process development and manufacturing organizations with their associated revenue and profit plans as they relate to the on-time delivery of analytical and process development milestones.
  • The individual has a direct impact on work group performance; helps drive work group results.

BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS:

The position typically requires a MS and 1+ years’ experience, BS and 4+ years’ experience or AS and 6+ years’ experience

The individual should have demonstrated proficiency in the follow areas

  • Advanced technique and basic chemistry or biochemistry knowledge
  • Independent use and application of instrumentation, computer systems and software for data acquisition and analysis
  • Ability to assist in designing, conducting, analyzing, data plotting and reporting the results of laboratory experiments
  • Monitors ongoing experiments for any unusual occurrences
  • Ability to assist understand and apply required techniques in support of projects and studies according to pre-defined plans and protocols
  • Be comfortable multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment with defined deliverables and deadlines

FDBU works with technical data, technology and materials that are subject to U.S. export laws and regulations. This position will require access to technical data, technology and source code that is controlled under U.S. export laws and regulations, including but not limited to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations at 22 C.F.R.
